Fringe Sport MagPins Review

Fringe Sport MagPins are magnetic pins that make it easier to add attachments to my squat rack.

Magnetic pins have made their way into home gyms replacing old hitch pins found at hardware stores.

These use strong magnets to keep rack attachments in place and are more aesthetically pleasing.

Let’s check them out!

Unboxing

The MagPins came in a hard cylindrical tube kinda like how barbells are shipped.

I got a blue and purple but they’re also available in four other colors.

I opened the tubes and the magnetic pins were covered in thin paper wrapping.

And here they are…

They feel solid and I like that they added knurling to the cap so it makes it easier to grip when the pins are stuck to my uprights.

What Are Fringe Sport MagPins?

what are fringe sport magpins

MagPins (short for magnetic pins) are pins used to add attachments to squat racks and functional trainers like the Fringe Sport Dane.

They can be used for attachments like a bulldog pad, dip bar, lever arms, spotter arms, etc.

Top Benefits Of Fringe Sport Mag Pins

Secure Rack Attachments

The main benefit of using magnetic pins is that they make it easy to add rack attachments to my weight rack and keep them on safely.

I use Fringe Sport MagPins with several of my home gym rack attachments:

  • Bulletproof Isolator: The MagPins support the Isolator’s carriage and that sucker is heavy, it weighs about 40 lbs

These can also be used with other rack attachments like lever arms, dip bars, spotter arms, etc.

Best Features of Fringe Sport Mag Pins

Knurled Cap

I don’t think the knurling is completely necessary on the caps but it does give the caps some texture to make it easier to pull them off.

Aesthetically, the caps look much better than the red handles on hitch pins.

Magnets

The magnets sit right at the junction of the pin and the cap.

There’s 7 magnets so the pins stay in place well.

I tested the snap back mechanism on my monolift attachments and they stayed in place.

Safety Pin

Although the cotter pin is not necessary to keep the on the upright, I like that they included that as a safety feature.

Hitch Pins vs MagPins

If you’ve been a home gym owner long enough, you’ve seen people use hitch pins like the one above to connect attachments to their rack.

These work well and and the handle can be used to attach bands, pulleys, suspension trainers, etc.

The handle can get beat up like you see on mine but they still function well.

One advantage of MagPins over hitch pins is that they don’t shift around while exercising because of the magnets on the cap.

Aesthetically, the hitch pins don’t look as nice as MagPins do so if appearance is something you care about, MagPins do the trick.

Fringe Sport MagPegs

Fringe Sport also sells MagPegs (magnetic band pegs).

These are just like their MagPins except the shaft is longer at 9.375″.

I’ve used band pegs before and they tend to move around a lot so adding magnets is a good idea.

Pros & Cons

pros and cons of magnetic pins

Pros

  • Secure: Magnets hold the pin in place and the cotter pin prevents it from being pulled out accidentally
  • Build: Made out of thick stainless steel so it’s durable
  • Knurled cap: Knurling on the cap makes it easier to grip
  • Magnets: Magnets are strong enough to keep the pin from coming off my uprights during exercise but not too strong that they get stuck
  • Lifetime warranty: If anything goes wrong, I can get a new pair at no cost

Cons

  • No handles: Unlike hitch pins, these don’t have a handle where I can attach resistance bands or pulley systems

Fringe Sport MagPins Alternatives

Surplus Strength VECHS Speed Pins

surplus strength vechs speed magnetic pins

The Surplus Strength VECHS magnetic speed pins have a 5″ shaft and they have something other MagPins don’t.

At the end of the shaft, Surplus Strength added an oblong 1″ hole to clip carabiners to it.

This solves the lack of a handle that all MagPins have and I think this is an excellent way to make the pins more usable in a home gym.

I can attach resistance bands, suspension straps, pulleys, the Henny attachment, or just use them as home gym storage to hang accessories.

Bells Of Steel

Bells of Steel’s magnetic pins come in three different sizes.

There’s a 5/8″ version with a 5″ shaft…

And two 1″ versions: (1) 5.1″ shaft and (2) a shorty with a 1.4″ shaft

Exponent Edge

Exponent Edge has magnetic pins in 5/8″ and 1″ sizes.

Both sizes have a 6″ shaft and a cap that’s not knurled but easy to grip.

My Experience Using Fringe Sport MagPins

I like MagPins, although I wish they came with a handle like regular hitch pins do because I’d be able to attach resistance bands and other accessories.

And if you’re into making your home gym aesthetically pleasing like I am, these are a good choice.

Conclusion: Should You Buy Fringe Sport MagPins?

Fringe Sport MagPins are solid and have an extra level of security with a cotter pin at the end of the shaft.

If you’re someone who uses a lot of rack attachments, these are upgrade to old hitch pins.

They come with a knurled cap and different color options, to add a bit of customization to your home gym.
