I took the mace out of the box and the handle comes wrapped in plastic.
The head has bubble wrap for extra protection since it’s the heavier end.
And here’s the 25 lbs mace naked…
I like the all black steel look with knurling in the middle and end of the handle.

What Is A Steel Mace?
A steel mace is a training tool that has a heavy head on the end of a long handle.
Because of the position and weight of the head, it creates a long lever that puts you at a disadvantage.
When putting the mace through different movements, you can work your shoulders, core strength, grip strength, and balance.
Later on, I’ll show you a video with several exercises.
Top Benefits of The ProsourceFit Steel Mace
Core Strength & Stability
Whenever I swing the mace, my core immediately fires to prevent the momentum from pulling me.
This prevention of movement helps me improve core and strength and stability in a way that’s more functional than wasting my time doing planks.
Plus it helps me with core rotational strength which is not something I train often.
Increased Shoulder Mobility
Shoulder mobility is something many people lack including myself and using the steel mace has helped me tremendously.
Anytime I move the mace behind my back, I’m forced to brace my core so I don’t round my lower back and my shoulder flexion opens up too.
Overall, my shoulder range of motion is getting better because of mace exercises I’ve never done before.
Grip Strength
There’s no doubt that my forearms and grip are constantly being tested with a mace.
My forearms start firing just from holding it up in an upright position and preventing the heavy end from moving…
And when I swing it around, my grip is working overtime otherwise the momentum will rip the mace out of my hands.
Best Features of The ProsourceFit Steel Mace
Handle
The handle on the 25 lbs mace is 1.5″ thick which I prefer so it gets my forearm muscles to work harder.
At almost 42″ long, it makes the head feel much heavier than it is.
So the further away from the head I hold the handle, the harder the exercises get.
Knurling
The knurling is passive and it’s good enough to maintain a good grip.
I haven’t played around with enough steel maces to compare if the knurling makes a big difference.
There’s knurling on the end of the handle and also in the middle for whenever I wanna choke up.
Head
The head on the ProsourceFit steel mace is 5″ long and it’s a heavy ball of metal.
This is the end that puts me through hell but I enjoy it.
If you notice, it has a flat end which is convenient because it can stand up on it’s own.
I can set the mace on the ball and it’ll stay vertical.
This is a great design idea because if I wanted to buy other maces they won’t take up a lot of floor space.
With as much equipment as I review and for any garage gym owner, home gym organization is a MUST!

Steel Mace Workout Program
Onnit has a 6 week steel mace 6 workout plan that guides you through challenging workouts.
It’s designed to help you lose weight, build functional strength, move and feel better.
ProsourceFit Steel Mace Alternatives
The BAMF hammer is an alternative to the steel mace that I can swing around and also slam it like a sledge hammer without needing a tire.
Because of the long handle, the 25 lbs steel mace feels heavier than the 27 lbs hammer (on the left) since the lever is longer.
BAMF’s handle is also much shorter so I can control it better.
I do have to be careful when swing the hammer though, cause the rectangular head is bigger and I don’t really wanna knock myself out.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Versatile: I can use this for multiple functional exercises that I can’t replicate with dumbbells
- Build: All metal build will last a lifetime
- Finish: Black powder coat finish to reduce rust
- Handle: Thick handle (1.5″) with passive knurling feels secure when I swing the mace around
- Storage: I like that it stores vertically so it doesn’t take up much floor space
- Upper body: Has worked great for my grip, shoulders, and core
Cons
- Fixed weight: I can’t adjust the weight on the steel mace but I can control my hand position which changes how the weight feels

My Experience Using The Steel Mace
The steel mace is humbling because the weight is off center so it forces me to control every rep.
My core is always engaged and it forces me to work on rotational movements which I don’t really get with regular weight training.
And I’ve been able to loosen up my shoulders which has been a huge help in all areas of training but especially when doing single arm dynamic exercises with my kettlebells.
Conclusion: Should You Buy a ProsourceFit Steel Mace?
If you’re just starting out on your fitness journey, then a steel mace may be too advanced for you.
It requires a lot of control which is something beginners have to master with time.
But if you’re looking to venture into unconventional methods of training with odd objects, this is a fun one.
The steel mace will last you a lifetime, teach you to engage your core, and improve your entire upper body mobility.
