Rogue Strongman Sandbag Review

The Rogue strongman sandbag I’ll be reviewing in this post is a 100 lbs bag but I’ll also show you a variety of sandbags available.

Rogue also sells strongman sandbags that are 150, 200, 250, 300, and 400 lbs.

I’ve gotta say the Strongman sandbag is a lot of fun and definitely adds a new dimension to my workouts because there’s nothing like it.

It doesn’t have any handles which adds to the difficulty of the workout.

You really have to use your legs to get low and drive the weight off the floor.

And it’s not a solid piece of metal so the weight shifts when you move it around, making your whole body work to create stability.

Rogue Strongman Sandbag Unboxing

The Rogue Strongman sandbags are shipped flat in a plastic bag.

The filler material is not included and that makes sense because if they were filled, shipping would be ridiculously high.

Keep reading and I’ll show you the cheap material I used to fill up my bag.

After opening up the bag, you’ll see the sandbag inside another plastic bag with an instructions sheet on how to fill it up.

Once you take out of the clear plastic bag, the Rogue Strongman sandbag is as flat as a pancake and it has a protection flap on the top.

This flap is not meant to be a handle so don’t use it as one.

It’s held to the top of the bag by velcro.

How to Fill Up Your Strongman Sandbag

The instructions on how to fill up the strongman sandbag are pretty straight forward.

After lifting the protection flap you’ll see a heavy duty zipper that will lead you to the built-in filler bag.

Reach inside and pull out the built-in filler bag, which is held together at the top by heavy duty velcro.

Pull the top of the filler bag apart and it turns into a funnel and you’re ready to fill it up.

Sandbag Filler

There are many options for what you can use as a sandbag filler and they’re all inexpensive.

  • Play sand – $4.10 for 50 lbs. It can get messy when filling up the bag.
  • Rubber mulch
  • Wood pellets
  • Pea pebbles – $3.98 for 50 lbs. Easy to pick up and add to bag.

The best sandbag filler I found is pea pebbles or pea gravel.

I picked up two bags which weigh around 50 lbs for $3.98 each at Home Depot.

I suggest you air them out for at least a day before inserting them inside your sandbag.

They keep these pebbles in the gardening section and the bags usually have moisture inside them from being exposed to the rain.

Rogue Strongman 100 lbs Sandbag

The diameter of the 100 lbs strongman sandbag is about the same as the diameter of a 45 lbs weight plate.

Once it’s filled with the pea pebbles, the height of the 100 lbs sandbag is about 8 1/2 inches.

Over time the bags may stretch a little bit from the beating and pounding they take.

Sandbag Workouts

Sandbag workouts can be very challenging and there are so many different exercises you can do.

Below you’ll see me doing an over the shoulder toss with the 100 lbs Rogue Strongman sandbag.

The different shapes of sandbags and the amount of filler you put in them will also make workouts different.

A bag that’s not filled all the way will shift more during lifts, making the workout more challenging.

And the best part about having a sandbag is that I can get a killer workout for less than $100!

You don’t see that price very often with Rogue Fitness products unless you find deals in the Rogue Boneyard.

Aside from doing Strongman workouts, I also like to throw the sandbag on my Rogue Sled Slice sled.

This gives me a killer conditioning workout.

I push the sled with the sandbag on top then when I stop, I pick up the sandbag and bust out reps of whatever exercise I want.

Duffel Bag Shaped Sandbags

Rogue’s duffel shaped sandbags give your workouts even more instability than the Strongman bags because there’s more weight shifting from the center of mass.

They also have handles which helps you improve grip strength.

These come in 4 sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large.

  • Small sandbag is 20″ long with a diameter of 7″ and holds up to 40 lbs of sand.
  • Medium sandbag is 24″ long with a diameter of 9″ and holds up to 80 lbs of sand.
  • Large sandbag is 35″ long with a diameter of 11″ and holds up to 160 lbs of sand.
  • Extra large sandbag is 42″ long with a dimeter of 14″ and holds up to 220 lbs of sand.

Filler Bags for Duffel Bag Shaped Sandbags

The duffel shaped bags come with 2 options for filler bags.

  • Traditional filler bags: These are small bags that you shove into the sandbags. Each sandbag can hold 3-4 traditional filler bags that correspond to the size of sandbag you order. If you’re interested in quick weight changes during your workout, then this is the filler bag to go with.
  • Funnel filler bags: This is a single filler bag that has a funnel on top similar to the strongman sandbags. You insert it inside the sandbag before you fill it up, then add your desired filler.

Competitor Sandbags

Below you’ll see some of the popular sandbags sold by other fitness companies.

They don’t sell many strongman sandbags.

All the bags listed on their website are duffel bag shaped with handles.

Rogue Strongman Sandbag Conclusion

Overall, any Rogue Strongman sandbag will give you a hell of a workout.

The bags are made in the U.S. with 1000D MIL Spec US Cordura material, which makes them very durable.

They have zippers and hook-and-loop enclosures on the outside along with a velcro flap which means the chances of the filler material getting out of the sandbag are slim to none.

If you purchase more than one bag, you can easily stack them on top of each other so they don’t take up much space.

And you know you’re getting a quality product if Rogue stamps their name on it.
