XMaster Chrome Weight Plates Review

XMaster chrome weight plates with handles are a thing of beauty.

Aesthetically they’ll turn your neighbors’ heads.

Functionally, I love the handles because it makes me feel like I’m not going to drop them on my toes.

Let’s check them out!

Unboxing

xmaster chrome weight plates reviews 1

I got the 230 lbs set and a set of change plates and here’s how the chrome plates were delivered.

Each plate came it’s own box, taped and strapped, so even the most pissed off delivery driver couldn’t toss them and rip those boxes.

Once I got them out of the box, each plate came in a sleeve and boy are these nice to look at.

That chrome finish is eye candy and they feel very dense.

Here’s all of them out laid out on my garage gym floor.

Obvious difference is that the heaviest plates have handles while change plates don’t which makes sense.

You wanna have a better grip as the weight increases.

One thing I noticed about the change plates, is that the backside is completely blank.

I don’t know why they don’t include the weight on this side but that’s just an observation I made.

What Are Chrome Weight Plates?

XMaster chrome weight plates are steel plates that have a chrome coating and are thinner than regular weight plates.

Aesthetically, it makes them look nice because they’re shiny.

From a durability standpoint, the chrome finish helps to prevent rust from forming on the plates.

Top Benefits Of XMaster Chrome Weight Plates

Rust Resistant

xmaster chrome weight plates reviews 20

Where I live it gets very humid during the summer in my garage gym so the chrome finish on these is beneficial.

This way I don’t have to worry about rust building up over time.

Safe

With handles I feel safer knowing that I can grip the weight plates more securely without the fear of dropping them on my toes.

The handles also make them more functional since I can use them for farmer carries, shoulder shrugs, anterior shoulder raises, etc.

Best Features Of XMaster Chrome Weight Plates

Thin Weight Plates

With a thickness of less than an inch, these weight plates are slightly thicker than my other thin weight plates from Weight It Out.

weight it out thin plates

I measured Weight It Out’s 45 lbs plate and it’s 3/4″ thick.

XMaster’s 45 lbs chrome plate is 13/16″ thick so it’s only 1/16″ thicker than Weight It Out’s.

XMaster vs Weight It Out

Here are both weight plates right next to each other so to my naked eye there’s not much of a difference in thickness.

One thing I did notice, is that XMaster’s chrome plates fit tighter around the barbell sleeve than Weight It Out’s.

So there’s less wobble when the plates are on the floor.

xmaster change plates

Next I wanted to compare XMaster’s chrome change plates to a set of fractional weight plates I have from Micro Gainz.

xmaster fitness fractional weight plates

Here’s Micro Gainz’s 1 lbs weight plates right next to XMaster’s 1 lbs plate.

Diameter is obviously bigger for XMaster’s…

xmaster vs micro gainz change plates

And from the side you can see how thin XMaster’s plate is next to Micro Gainz’s.

Doesn’t really matter much cause weight is weight but I see the thickness (or thinness) being more beneficial from a storage standpoint.

Thin plates take up less room on a weight tree plate especially if you’re limited in space like I am in a garage gym.

The downside to thin weight plates is that they’re harder to pick up off the floor.

Especially the 25’s, 35’s, and 45’s.

I have to put my foot on one side to keep them from sliding and dig my fingers on the other end to pick them up.

Handles

weight plates with handles

I’ve always been a fan of the old school iron weight plates with handles because they’re easier to carry and move around.

All of XMaster’s hand grip chrome weight plates have handles except for the 10 lbs plates and lower (change plates).

Another reason I like weight plates with handles is because I like to do weighted calisthenics with them.

I throw on a dip belt, connect my UClips to it, then insert the UClips into the handle and I’m ready to go.

I can use this set up for pull ups and dips as well.

Color Strip

I like that they added a color coded silicone strip around each plate.

This matches the colors on my XMaster bumper plates (and other bumper plates) so that it’s easy to identify each plate based on color.

The 45’s are blue, 35’s are yellow, and 25’s are green.

Xmaster Chrome Weight Plates Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Aesthetics: These will turn heads because they look so clean and shiny
  • Rust resistant: Chrome finish helps to maintain them from getting rusty
  • Handles: I like that the handles give me a secure grip and I can also use them for exercises like shrugs or farmer walks
  • Thickness: Thin plates are easier to store
  • Calisthenics: They’re more comfortable to use with plate loaded weight vests or Uclips if you’re into bodyweight training

Cons

  • Floor pick up: With these plates being so flat, they’re difficult to pick up off the floor.
  • Dirt: Dust and finger prints are more visible on these compared to regular iron weight plates.

XMaster Chrome Weight Plates Price

The price of the XMaster hand grip chrome steel plates is $819 for the 230 lbs set I got (buying a set is more economical than buying in pairs).

This comes out to $3.56/lbs per plate which is a bit of the high side but remember these are premium plates.

Kensui Fitness calibrated chrome weight plates are very similar to XMaster’s and less expensive.

My Experience Using Xmaster Chrome Weight Plates

As a home gym enthusiast, I love the look on these plates because who doesn’t like shiny chrome?

The handles are a big plus because I can hang on to them securely and also use them for weighted calisthenics.

Only minor issue I have is that they’re harder to pick up off the floor because they’re very flat.

Other than that, I like them a lot.

Conclusion: Should You Buy Chrome Weight Plates?

If you’re a home gym enthusiast who loves nice looking equipment and have some extra cash to splurge on, I say get them.

They’re eye candy and feel extremely dense as you go up in weight.

They’re a premium product so you’ll be paying a bit more than just regular weight plates but the quality is top notch.
