Flybird Roman Chair Bench Review

The Flybird Roman chair bench is a multi-functional bench.

It can be used as a regular weight bench, preacher curl bench, sit up bench, and a Roman chair bench.

I’ve reviewed the Flybird’s Pro bench before and I like it.

So it’s time to check this out one and see what it’s all about.

Let’s dig in…

Unboxing

Table of Contents

Both Flybird benches I’ve used came nicely packed with foam and plastic around all the pieces.

Once I got everything out of the box and inspected everything, all the parts were free from damage.

There aren’t many pieces to put together for this bench so assembly doesn’t take very long.

And of course, all the hardware is included.

Here’s the Flybird Roman chair bench all built.

At first glance it looks like the bench pad is short but it’s actually adjustable and can be made longer (I’ll show you in a bit).

And compared to the Flybird Pro bench, it looks less stout but I’ll have to test it out with different exercises.

Features

Roman Chair / Preacher Pad

The Roman chair for back extensions is what sets this bench apart from the rest of Flybird’s benches.

And of course this doubles as a preacher pad as well.

For my shoulder width, Flybird’s pad is narrow when using it for two-armed preacher curls but I have no issues using it one arm at a time.

And just like the pad on my Bulletproof Fitness Isolator, it can be set at different angles.

It can be adjusted to three different angles by pulling a pin on the back of the pad.

I pulled out the pad to show you the 6 different holes it has so you can see it’s height adjustable.

This way it can be used by people of different sizes.

Rubber Handles

Right next to the preacher pad there’s a couple of handles.

I use these when doing decline leg raises.

They’re rubberized so they have good grip.

Leg Support

Here’s what the leg support rollers look like.

The padding feels comfortable when I have my calves or shin right against it.

And just like the preacher pad, the leg support is also adjustable.

Except this one has four different angles vs three on the preacher pad.

I usually change it to a higher angle when doing sit ups.

Foot Plates

To go along with the Roman chair back extensions feature, this Flybird bench has a couple of foot plates welded to the back legs.

This keeps my feet angled to get a 45 degree low back extension feel.

Between the foot plates, leg support pads, and preacher pad, lower back extensions feel right on the bench.

Adjustable Headrest

Aside from this bench, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a weight bench with an adjustable head rest.

There’s a knob below the headrest that at first I didn’t even know about.

I can’t be the only one who doesn’t read the entire instructions manual, right?

But I just happen to be inspecting the bottom of the bench and there it was.

I loosened the knob, pulled it out, and just like that the bench got longer.

Cool feature since most of my body weight falls on the rest of the back pad so the headrest doesn’t require a ton of support.

Adjustable Legs

This is a feature I’ve seen in other benches and I think it’s helpful.

When I turn the dials on the legs they raise that side in case of uneven floors.

Just in case your floors are uneven, this reduces wobble and helps to keep the bench stable.

Exercises On The Flybird Roman Chair Bench

Of course, the first one I’m going to show you is the Roman chair lower back extension.

This feels good on the lower back and I have enough support at the hips to really feel it in my low back muscles.

Here I’m using the handles on the pad to hold me while doing decline leg raises for abs.

When doing preach curls, I feel more comfortable doing them one arm at time.

If I use both arms, it feels like my elbows are too close to one another.

For decline sit ups I took off the preacher pad and angled the leg support pads higher.

And finally, here I am doing some dumbbell chest presses.

So there’s just a few exercises you can do on the Flybird Roman chair bench.

Of course, there’s many more that can be done since it’s a versatile bench.

Pros & Cons

flybird roman chair bench review

What I Like

  • Affordable: At less $140, it’s an economical multi-purpose bench (keep reading for an additional 10% discount)
  • Versatile: Can be used as a weight bench plus the added pad gives it more functionality
  • Stability: Feels very stable
  • Good for beginners: I see it as more for the casual home gym owner who doesn’t lift very heavy although it has a 700 lbs weight capacity
  • Adjustable: Can fit people of different sizes

What I Would Improve

  • Incline: Add an incline option so the bench has even more exercises options
  • Preacher pad: I would increase the width of the preacher pad for people with wide shoulders but works great one arm at a time
  • Back pad: Back pad could be made longer so that taller people can use it comfortably

Flybird Roman Chair Bench Review

Overall, this is a good bench for beginners or the casual lifter who’s not going very heavy.

It’s a light bench with great stability and lots of versatility.

The preacher pad / Roman chair set up gives it more functionality than just a regular weight bench.

And with its low price, it’s a bench that most people will be able to afford to get a full body workout.
