Squat Wedges Review (Double Circle Fitness)

In this post I’ll be reviewing the Double Circle squat wedges.

In a nutshell, squat wedges give you the ability to squat deeper, activate the quads more, and protect your spine.

These wedges are made out of steel and are individual for each foot, which I prefer over my old wooden wedge.

Let me show you why I think these are much better.

Unboxing

The Double Circle squat wedges come wrapped in individual plastic bags with a piece of foam in between .

The wedges have a bad ass look to them.

They feel solid, are made of all metal, and diamond plated on top.

Each side of the wedges has the Double Circle branding laser cut into them.

The bottom is hollow and has a couple of rubber bumpers to prevent slipping.

Squat Wedge Features

Anti-slip Textured Surface

The top of the wedges is diamond plated to help improve grip.

Stability

At the bottom of each wedge there’s two rubber bumpers.

These give the wedges stability and prevent them from shifting while under weight.

From one end to the other, the wedges seem to be well built because there’s no wobble.

Rubber Band Slot

Under each squat wedge there’s a slot that runs from side to side.

This lets you slide resistance bands through for added resistance while exercising.

Handle

The back of each squat wedge has an oval opening that’s designed to be a handle.

Individual Squat Wedges vs Wedge Boards

There’s a couple of squat wedges you can buy.

One is a single board that comes with a fixed length.

These can be made of wood or other strong material like steel that can hold a lot of weight.

Or you can buy individual wedges for each foot.

Wedge boards work but the problem with them is that you are stuck with one width.

You can’t place your feet any wider so you’re limited to one way to set up.

With individual squat wedges, you have more options.

You can set up in a narrow or wide stance.

You can also set them at an angle so that your toes point out to give you a bit more range of motion.

Benefits of Squat Wedges

Increased Mobility

A lack of ankle dorsiflexion is a big issue when performing a proper squat.

By using a wedge, you take the ankles out of the equation and no you can bend your knees and hips more and squat deeper.

Spine Protection

The wedge pushes your knees forward, brings your hips closer to your feet, and keeps your spine in an upright position.

Increased Quad Activation

Because you’re able to squat deeper and get more range of motion with a wedge, you activate the quads more.

The emphasis on the quads feels like you’re using a leg press hack squat machine from home.

Resistance band slots

Right below each squat wedge, there is a raised slot designed to insert resistance bands through.

You can use thick or thin resistance bands since there’s plenty of space.

Your body weight keeps the bands from going anywhere.

This is what a squat looks like using the bands with the wedges.

The squat starts under some tension.

At the top of the squat the exercise becomes harder because of the increased resistance by the band.

Exercises With Squat Wedges

Squat wedges are more than a one trick pony.

You can do several exercises with them as you’ll see below.

I’m sure there’s more that could be added to this list as well.

Squats

Get deeper squats by reducing ankle dorsiflexion and increasing knee and hip flexion.

This is a big exercise used in the Knees Over Toes program because it emphasizes quad strength and development.

If you’re short on floor space and cash, these can be an effective alternative to a leg extension machine.

Calf Stretches

Toes up, heels down, and feel your calves stretching.

Calf Raises

Get on your tippy toes and come back down to work the calves through a full range of motion.

Lunges

You can increase the depth of your lunges with the squat wedges too.

Just like with a squat, it takes away dorsiflexion of your ankle so you can go deeper into the lunge.

The Ripped Ramp is a single squat wedge that’s wide enough for both feet at the same time.

One thing that’s unique about this squat wedge is that is has an arch at the bottom to use wight resistance bands.

Made out of steel, this will last you a lifetime.

Exponent Edge Flex Wedge

The Exponent Edge Flex Wedge is a tank of a squat wedge.

It’s adjustable in 7 angles, weighs 33 lbs, and has a weight capacity of 1000 lbs.

I use this for many exercises: calf raises, heel elevated squats, deficit split squats, landmine exercises, and more…

Is It The Best Squat Wedge?

I really like the Double Circle squat wedges.

Do I consider it the best squat wedge?

I personally don’t see any flaws with it.

It’s built out of solid steel, it’s stable, has a high weight capacity, and you have the option to add bands to it.

And having one for each foot gives you more foot positions to work with.

I dig them!
