Beyond Power Voltra 1 Review

The Beyond Power Voltra 1 is the best rack mounted home gym cable machine I’ve used.

This is not your regular rack attached cable machine…

It comes with several variable resistance options that take cable workouts to another level.

Let’s check it it out!

Unboxing

The Voltra 1 and accessories came in several boxes.

One of the boxes had the Beyond Power Voltra 1 unit and handle.

Another box came with the sliding rack mount so I can move it up and down my uprights like a functional trainer.

Each Voltra 1 comes in a foam travel case along with a charging block and cable.

The case gives it plenty of protection during shipping and whenever I want to take it outside of my garage gym.

And here it is out of the box…

On the left side it has a square touch screen where I control everything.

Right above the screen is the power button.

I like that the screen displays the number of reps and sets while I’m working out.

Beyond Power also has an app called Beyond+ that can sync to the unit and I can control the resistance and other features from my phone.

The center of the unit has the cable surround by a chrome piece that allows it to glide smoothly.

What I really like about this chrome piece is that is rotates so I can pull the cable from different angles without restrictions.

And on the right side it has a handle with another button right above it.

When I press that button together with the power button, it unlocks the unit from the sliding rack mount.

The back of the Voltra 1 has a circular piece that connects to the rack mount.

All I do is insert that circle into the rack mount and it locks itself in place automatically.

And on the back side there’s a USB port so I can connect it when I need to charge it.

The touch screen displays the battery life on the top left corner.

Handle

Each unit comes with a D-handle and carabiner that clips to the end of the cable.

And of course, I can use any other accessories I already own.

If I wanna do tricep pushdowns from one unit, I add my triceps rope to the unit.

Since the Voltra 1 goes up to 200 lbs of resistance, I can attach my IronMaster ultimate row handle for heavier compound exercises.

The options for attachments are endless.

Sliding Rack Mount

The other box brought the sliding rack mount which makes it easy to slide the unit up and down my uprights.

Beyond Power offers other mounts on their accessories page but for me, the sliding rack mount gives me the most flexibility.

The sliding rack mount is squared shaped and is adjustable to fit every type of weight rack.

According to the Beyond Power website, the rack mount works with uprights ranging from 1.7″ to 4.1″ wide.

The front of the rack mount has a hollow space where I insert the back of the Voltra 1.

One of the corners has a big dial that I can rotate in both directions.

This controls that inside piece (circled) moving it closer and further from the upright.

When I get it to touch the upright, the mount has a solid grip.

If I wanna move the mount up and down the upright to change angles, then I turn the knob until that piece is not touching the upright.

The orange knob is spring loaded and has a pin on the opposite side.

That pin goes into the holes on my uprights giving the mount more stability.

As you can see, the knob can be slid from side to side to adjust to different rack sizes.

And the last piece is the lock/unlock buttons that are there to remove the mount from my uprights.

There’s a chrome button above and below that joint.

To unlock the corner, I press both top and bottom buttons at the same time, then press that silver tab towards the front.

That unlocks the corner and I can install the mount on my PRx rack and do the same when taking it off.

Setting Up The Voltra 1 On My Rack

I got the sliding rack mount on my uprights.

Pull pin on one side is in the 5/8″ hole to stabilize the right side.

Then I turn the grey knob clockwise to stabilize the left side and now the mount is not going anywhere.

Then I place the back of the Voltra 1 into the front of the mount and it locks itself in place.

Beyond Power Voltra Exercises

I use this height for exercises like cable crossovers and standing cable rows.

I’ll show you a few exercises at different heights so you can see how this slides up and down just like a functional trainer.

Of course, I have the option to change the resistance types with the Voltra 1 which I can’t do with a cable machine.

Here I anchored the rack mount at the top for exercises like lat pulldowns.

And here I’m doing tricep pushdowns.

Next, I’ll show you a couple exercises where I set up the unit at the bottom of my weight rack.

I got creative for this leg extension set up and used the Infinity Arm as my seat in combination with my OmniStrap leg cuffs.

Love the constant tension I feel throughout the exercise when doing leg extensions with a cable machine.

And here’s a seated cable row.

The amount of exercises I can do are endless and all without a big cable machine taking up extra space in my garage gym.

I even played around with a home gym hack where I attached the Voltra to a spotter arm and connected it to a squat belt.

This way I can train legs using the cable machine without putting any pressure on my lower back.

In the first 15 seconds of the video above, I show a belt squat hack using the Freak Athlete Hyper Pro and the Voltra’s Direct Load feature.

I’ll show you how I set this up using the Voltra’s Beyond+ app.

With the Direct Load feature, I can turn off the resistance on the cable, pull out the cable, and turn it back on again.

So I open up the Beyond+ app and turn off the resistance by clicking the green “Weight Off” button…

Then I pull out the cable out and run it through a pulley and pin it to the Freak Athlete Hyper Pro.

I step on the Hyper Pro’s legs and pull the cable up and clip it to my belt squat belt.

When I’m ready to start, I click on the green “Weight On” button and get a message asking if I want to load the cable..

So I click load and the cable now has full tension.

The cool thing about this for belt squats, is that I don’t have to struggle pulling the cable from the bottom position.

I turn it on while standing so I can set up without resistance and when I’m done my set, I shut it off while standing again.

Other Mounting Options

Adaptive Rack Mount

Another mount option is the adaptive rack mount.

This one doesn’t slide up and down but it’s still easy to move around and fits both 5/8″ and 1″ holes on ANY rack.

There’s a sliding pin in the front so it can fit any hole configurations.

The back of the mount has a 5/8″ pin that’s tightened with a spring locking knob.

I mainly use it on my 1″ front holes and it doesn’t budge at all despite the size difference so that knobs works really well.

Here’s what it looks like once I get the Voltra on it.

Rotator Add-On

The Rotator Add-On attaches to all of Beyond Power’s mounts to create 120 degrees of rotation and gives my Voltra extra angles to play with.

Here I have it pointing down while it’s anchored in a high position on my upright.

Here’s what that looks like once I connected the Voltra 1 unit to it.

This angle change gives the cable a more straight line of drive which can be good…

It can reduce the amount of friction the cable gets when I pull it sideways in some exercises.

I don’t think the Rotator is a necessity cause I can still use the Voltra without it, but it’s a nice addition to Voltra’s ecosystem.

Bar Mount

The bar mount is great for pull up bars up to 2″ in diameter.

I like this set up for lat pulldowns, tricep push downs, face pulls, weighted crunches, woodchops, and overhead tricep extensions.

Here’s what it looks like from the side.

The back piece is held together by 4 long bolts that use an Allen wrench.

And here’s what it looks like from the inside.

It’s lined with rubber pieces that grip around the pull up bar.

And here it is from the front.

Once I get it tightly on the bar, it’s really stable and doesn’t slide around.

Strap Mount

The Voltra’s strap mount can be used to mount the Voltra to any surface (round, squared, trees, etc) with the use of a heavy duty belt.

The back of the strap mount has magnet so whenever I attach it to my weight rack, it stays in place while I secure the belt.

Between the side buckle and the handle in the front, it uses a dual locking mechanism so the Voltra is not going anywhere even at max capacity.

This has become one of my favorite mounts because I can use it in my garage gym and outdoors.

Beyond Power Voltra Travel Platform

A mounting option I really like to take the Voltra 1 anywhere, is the Travel Platform.

The Voltra connects to the platform the same way as it does on the sliding mount and locks itself in place automatically.

And even though I can only do exercises from the floor up, I still have plenty of options to hit most body parts.

Training Modes

The training modes are what set the Voltra 1 above other cable machines.

I’ll break down the three training modes below…

Weight Training Mode

Weight training mode is the same as a cable machine you’d find at a gym.

I get constant resistance through the concentric and eccentric portion of exercises.

The resistance goes up to 200 lbs and I can change it by swiping my finger up and down the touch screen.

Eccentric

Here’s where the Voltra 1 starts to get fun…

I can change the eccentric portion of the exercise to be heavier than concentric.

In the screen above, I have it set to 30 lbs of concentric and 13 additional on the eccentric.

So the concentric portion will feel like 30 lbs and the eccentric like 43 lbs.

I love this configuration when I do cable chest presses because it forces me to slow down the negative.

The burn is crazy when I’m forced to resist more weight than I’m pushing.

I like do the same with side lateral raises.

The cable gives me constant resistance on the way up and on the way down I’m fighting the added eccentric resistance like crazy.

Talk about an insane pump at the end of every set.

Chains

I can also select “Chains” mode to make the resistance feel like when you add chains to a barbell.

The resistance starts at a specific weight and increases as I pull the cable making it harder at the end of the movement.

It’s insane that I can do this with a cable machine but it makes exercises more challenging where they usually get easier.

I use the chains mode when doing squats with my squat harness.

On a regular barbell squat, the weight feels heaviest at the bottom.

With chains mode, the resistance increases the closer I get to the top.

Eccentric & Chains Together

If I really feel like torturing myself and shocking my muscles I can increase the eccentric portion and add chains to the exercises.

Resistance Band Mode

Resistance band mode gives me dynamic progressive resistance.

The further I pull the cable, the harder the resistance gets just like if I was using resistance bands.

So when I do pull ups, the resistance increases as I pull myself up, making pull ups way harder.

Damper Mode

Damper mode works with speed: the faster I pull, the more resistance I get.

Easiest example I can give you, is someone sprinting with a parachute strapped to them.

You’ll see a parachute displayed on the screen when you’re in Damper mode.

This is for explosive movements and I can see this being real good for athletes.

Think someone swinging a bat or racket, sprinting, jumping, rowing, etc, against resistance.

In the video above, I’m using Damper mode to simulate a SkiErg machine and a kayak (without taking up any extra space in my garage).

This set up is similar to the newly released Torque Relentless Ripper.

Beyond Power Voltra 1 Alternatives

Ancore Trainer

I previously reviewed the Ancore Trainer which is another rack attached cable machine.

And after posting a couple Voltra videos on Instagram, many people started asking about the difference between the two machines.

The Ancore trainer uses small resistance plates and has a weight range from 5 – 65 lbs, which is much lower than Voltra’s 200 lbs.

Ancore trainer feels like a regular cable machine where you get resistance pushing/pulling and on the way back.

Both work but when comparing Voltra 1 to Ancore, Voltra is on another level.

It provides up to 200 lbs of resistance, touch screen, variable resistance modes, and tracks metrics.

Shogun Sports Flex

The Shogun Flex is also an electronic cable machine rack attachment but this one is only controlled through their app, there’s no touch screen.

Like the Voltra, it has constant and variable resistance but the max resistance is only 44 lbs.

Compared to the Voltra’s 200 lbs, the difference is big.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Compatibility: Works with any power rack because of the adjustable rack mount
  • Variable resistance: Unlike a regular cable machine or functional trainer, I can change the resistance curves on the Voltra 1
  • Space saving: I don’t have room for a functional trainer in my home gym, so being able to add this to my weight rack is a huge space saver
  • Adjustable: I can move the unit up and down my rack to change angles
  • Resistance changes: Touch screen makes changing resistance fast and easy
  • 1:1 Ratio: The resistance I select is the exact resistance I get
  • Micro loading: I can increase the resistance in 1 lbs increments like with fractional weight plates so I can progressively overload

Cons

  • Cost: Each unit costs $2099 because it’s a premium product with more options than traditional cable machines
  • Color: I’m not crazy about the color of the unit, it’d be great if color options were available

  2. I have a fold in style rack, that can lift slightly if I need to fold it in. I was trying to figure out if using this for any exercises that are located at the bottom of my rack would lift the upright if on a heavy setting. I see you have a folding up rack, do you have any issues with it trying to lift the rack off the floor?

    1. Yes, if the resistance you are pulling is heavier than your rack then you’ll have to offset the weight somehow (except when doing pull ups since your weight holds it down).

      I hang sandbags from the arms that extend from my wall to the uprights and that works well.

      Some rack companies like PRx also sell a lock that keeps the uprights from lifting.

  3. Hello, first off, thank you for your review. I’m definitely looking into the Voltra 1, biggest issue for me is space. I have 80″ basement ceiling, and my wife/boss, won’t let me expand outward (lol). So this would be perfect. Question though, is how the cable/line holding up? Is it fraying for you since you got it? With heavy weight setting and use could be an issue. Thanks again!

  4. Thanks for the review. Do you think you need the rotator add on? Plan on using with adjustable bar mount. Main exercises will be lat pull-downs (up high), tricep extensions (high), barbell curls (low), side raises (low) etc.

    1. To me it’s worth it because I want to be able do what a functional does without an actual functional trainer that takes up additional space I don’t have.

      Yes it feels smooth plus I like having the option to use different resistance modes.

      My favorite is being able to increase the eccentric cause the burn feels good.
