PRX PERFORMANCE RACK review

PRX Performance Rack Review

In this PRX Performance PRO rack review I’ll walk you through everything there is to know about this wall mounted folding squat rack and pull up bar.

Before and After PRX

Table of Contents

Before I show you everything about the PRX rack, I just want to give you a sample of what my garage used to look before and after I bought it.

This was my cluttered garage before…

Then I slowly started getting rid of all the crap I didn’t need.

And this is my garage after installing the PRX.

Space Utilization At Its Best

Front view of rack mounted on wall

The whole concept behind the PRX folding rack and the company’s motto is to “lift big in small spaces”.

They cater to home and garage gyms which can be limited in space so the whole idea of using the walls to get stuff off the floor is genius.

Side view of rack on floor

I’ve used this to my advantage and have become a pro at finding wall studs to get a lot of my garage gym equipment off the floor.

Minimal Intrusion

The PRX rack takes up very little space and that’s what makes it perfect for any home or garage gym.

When it’s folded up against the wall it only sticks out 4 inches.

When it’s on the floor it only takes up 22 inches which is insane for a whole rack.

Best of Both Worlds

I’ll probably get some heat for this one since most garage gym owners don’t like to park their cars inside.

But I’ve got kids and during the winter I’d rather not send them to school frozen.

Parking still available

With the PRX rack I can park my car inside and keep my kids warm and whenever I want to workout I just pull out the car.

If you’re a parent you know what I mean.

So with a space saving rack, you can have the best of both worlds.

You can workout and still keep your parking space.

Choose Your Rack

The rack comes in two versions: The Profile PRO and the Profile.

PRX Performance Profile Pro Rack

The PRO version comes with (2) 3 x 3 uprights that hold over 1000 lbs of weight.

You have the option to select two different heights:

  • For the 7’6” uprights you’ll need a ceiling height of 8’11”
  • For the 8′ uprights you’ll need a ceiling height of 9’5″

There is a way to work around short ceilings and that is by lowering the attachment of the linkage arms (the arms that connect the uprights to the wall) on the wall.

The PRX performance PRO rack also comes with (4) 120 lbs gas shocks that assist you with the up and down movement.

The bottom of the wall mounted folding squat rack comes with plastic foot plates to prevent scratching the floor and it stays safely folded against the wall by inserting a hitch pin through one of its side holes.

The PRX performance racks comes with 2 heavy duty j-hooks, laser cut numbers (only in the PRO version), and you can pick from 7 powdered coated colors (PRO version).

PRO Rack Specs

  • (2) 11-gauge 3×3 steel uprights (7’6″ or 8′)
  • 42″ steel kipping bar with more than 3 feet of clearance from the wall
  • (2) heavy-duty J-Cups
  • Plastic footplates to protect your floor
  • (4) 120 lbs gas shocks
  • Wall brackets (racks are 52″ wide on the outside dimension)
  • All mounting hardware
  • Color Options: Black, Orange, Blue, Neon Green, Red, Pink, Purple

PRX Performance Profile Rack

The PRX Profile rack is the smallest of the two PRX racks.

Profile Rack Specs

  • (2) 11-gauge 2×3 steel uprights (7’6″)
  • 42″ steel kipping bar with more than 3 feet of clearance from the wall
  • 2 x 3 J-Cups (pair)
  • Plastic footplates to protect your floor
  • (4) 100 lbs gas shocks
  • Wall Brackets (racks are 52″ wide on the outside dimension)
  • All mounting hardware
  • Only comes in black color (the PRO version gives you the option to pick colors)

PRX Profile vs Pro Rack

The differences between the Pro and Profile rack are:

  • Height options when selecting a pull-up or kipping bar
  • Heavy-duty 3×3 construction
  • Laser-cut numbers
  • Seven standard custom color options

Pull Up Bar Options

When I first bought the rack, PRX only had the option of a regular pull up bar and a kipping pull up bar.

Now they’ve added a new multi-grip pull up bar option to do neutral grip, semi-pronated, and semi-supinated pull ups.

I’ve been to get these grip options to my straight bar by adding Kensui Swissies.

I personally don’t do any kipping pull ups but I can see how people who do CrossFit can benefit from using the bar.

The kipping pull up bar extends more than 3 feet off the wall so I have enough room to exercise without hitting the wall.

PRX Rack Folding Mechanism

The PRX performance rack uses a vertical motion to mount to the wall and this makes it super easy because there’s no disassembly required.

When you lift the rack up, there’s 4 gas shocks assisting you with the weight.

Other wall mounted folding squat racks fold with a side to side motion and that requires a bit more work because you have to remove pins from each corner before you can fold them.

Once you lift the rack against the wall, you insert a hitch pin to one of the bottom sides so it locks in place.

Adding Accessories

As far as accessories go you can attach plenty of equipment without a problem.

The PRX Performance rack has plenty of 1″ and 5/8″ holes on all sides of the uprights.

You can attach J-cups, dip bars, spotter arms, landmine anchors, battle rope anchors, and just about anything you can think of.

You don’t have to use PRX brand accessories, just make sure the accessories match your uprights’ size (2×3 or 3×3).

Exercises on the PRX Rack

You can do just about any exercise that you can do on a non-folding rack with the PRX rack.

I’ve even gotten creative and added my own DIY cable pulley system.

With this cable set up I can do cable crossovers, low pulley, and high pulley exercises (see below).

Here’s a small sample of exercises I do on the PRX rack.

There’s hundreds of exercises you can do on it.

Rack Installation

Installing the PRO Rack wasn’t very hard at all.

I’m not very handy and I was able to do it with minimal help.

The hardest part is lifting the uprights since they’re the heaviest items so find yourself a partner for that part.

Just find yourself a solid stud finder and you should be good.

I use two stud finders just to be on the safe side.

An electronic one that tells me the outside margins of the stud, the other is a magnetic stud that sticks to nails that aren’t visible.

Wherever you find nails, you know there’s a stud there.

Once you find the wall studs, you shouldn’t have a problem attaching all the pieces to the wall.

Plus, PRX has installation guides and videos for many of their products so you can follow along step by step.

Rack Pros

  • Takes up very little space (4″ when folded, 22″ when on the floor)
  • Built with solid 11-gauge steel so it’s durable
  • Different sized holes for different attachments
  • You can pick from 8 different colors (PRO version only)
  • Laser cut numbers on uprights (PRO version only)
  • Durable steel construction Made in USA
  • Heavy duty gas shocks assist you in lifting/lowering the rack
  • All hardware included
  • Plastic footplates protect your floor
  • No disassembly required – just fold it when not in use

Rack Cons

  • It’s expensive but all good racks are (pay once, enjoy forever)

Final Verdict

Overall I’m very happy with my PRX Pro Rack.

I’ve owned it for over two years now and it’s still solid and I abuse it about 5 times a week.

It’s durable, it’s bad ass, and I still have plenty of garage space for more gym toys.

I’ve also added the PRx folding incline bench to go with the rack.

It sits right in between the uprights and doesn’t take up any floor space when not in use.

  2. Hi. Just wondering if you have had any issues finding non PRX attachments. We are comparing the ROGUE RML-3W to the PRX Pro and are concerned about the accessories options with the PRX PRO.

    Thanks
    Cory
