OmniStrap Review: MonkeyFeet Killer?

The OmniStrap is one of the most versatile workout ankle straps I’ve used.

I can attach dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells, and cable machines to it.

With no limitations on shoe size and an endless number of attachments it works with, could this be the MonkeyFeet killer?

Let’s dig in!

Each OmniStrap comes in a 6 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ box.

Small space but this strap can do a ton of stuff as I’ll show you in this post.

Once out of the box, the top portion looks like ankle weights and the bottom is a long strap.

Here’s a look at the thick, 2″ velcro strap that goes around my ankle.

Right next to the strap, there’s a D-ring that sits on top of the Achille’s tendon.

Here’s what the velcro strap looks like unattached.

This is a closer look at the D-ring on the back of the strap and the cam buckles.

The inside is made of neoprene padding.

When I flip the strap to the other side, you can see a second D-ring.

So there’s a D-ring in the back and one in the front for different cable or resistance band attachments.

omnistrap review

A 1″ wide strap passes through each buckle and wraps under my shoe to secure a dumbbell, kettlebell, cable, or resistance bands.

I’ll show you later how to set this up.

It’s a genius design that’s universal to any dumbbell regardless of their size.

the omnistrap

Looking at the bottom loop of the strap, you can see a wavy pattern that’s rubbery.

This sits at the top of my shoe and prevents the strap from slipping once a weight is secured on my foot.

Small loops along each side of the strap keep the loose ends from flapping around.

omnistrap reviews

The strap is fully removable if I want to use the OmniStrap with just the D-rings.

OmniStrap Pro

omnistrap pro reviews

A new version, the OmniStrap Pro, is now available.

This version will be available in different colors: red, yellow, black, and blue.

omnistrap pro reviews

The OmniStrap Pro comes with upgraded climbing buckles that hold a ton of weight.

So it’ll be even more secure when using heavier dumbbells and faster to remove the strap.

Not that the original cam buckles weren’t safe but these buckles are rated for heavier loads.

omnistrap pro reviews

They’re so much faster to remove and clip on to the ankle strap as well.

To release the long strap from the ankle strap, all I have to do is pinch the two ear-like things that stick out.

omnistrap pro reviews

That releases the long strap and if I want to put it back in, I insert it into its slot and it clicks in place.

omnistrap vs omnistrap pro

Here’s a side by side comparison of the original OmniStrap cam buckle and the OmniStrap Pro’s buckle.

The new OmniStrap Pro buckle (right) doesn’t hang on my ankle if I remove the long strap.

Watch the video above where I show how easy it is to release the long strap from the ankle strap with the new buckles on the OmniStrap Pro.

I can then easily transition to cable machine exercises.

How To Use The OmniStrap

First thing you do is wrap the OmniStrap around your ankle.

The long strap should be around the front of your foot.

ominstrap

Set a dumbbell (or any other form of resistance) under your foot and step on the handle.

Make sure the long strap is under the handle.

omnistrap review

Grab the strap from in front of your shoe and place it on top of the foot.

the omnistrap

Pull down the straps on both sides until the dumbbell fits tightly under your foot.

omnistrap reviews

Here’s what’s going on under my foot.

As I pull the side straps down through the cam buckles, the dumbbell handle gets pressed tightly against my shoe.

And that’s it!

Now I have resistance securely attached to my foot for isolation exercises.

One Size Fits All

omnistrap

One thing I really like about the OmniStrap is that anyone can use it regardless of shoe size.

The adjustable strap wraps around your foot without having to worry about whether your shoes are too wide.

Comfort

omnistrap review

The neoprene padding on the inside of the OmniStrap is about 1/4″ in thickness.

I’ve used it with different weight ranges and haven’t felt any discomfort.

Dumbbell Versatility

I tested the OmniStraps on several dumbbells and it works with all of them.

PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells

omnistrap powerblock

I tried using my MonkeyFeet boot on PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells and it didn’t work because of the cage around the handle.

But the OmniStrap’s design does work with the PowerBlock.

omnistrap for powerblock

Once it’s on it looks bulky because of the odd dumbbell shape.

But if you own PowerBlocks, the OmniStraps gives you an option for lower body isolation exercises.

Nuobell Adjustable Dumbbells

Here’s what the OmniStrap looks like on Nuobell dumbbells.

Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbells

This is it on the Core Home Fitness dumbbells.

JaxJox Adjustable Dumbbells

And here it is once more on the JaxJox dumbbells.

Trulap Adjustable Dumbbells

And here I am using the OmniStrap Pro on Trulap dumbbells.

This works on every single dumbbell I’ve tried.

Snode Adjustable Dumbbells

It works well with the Snode AD80 adjustable dumbbells.

Living Fit Hex Rubber Dumbbells

The OmniStrap is also compatible with Living Fit dumbbells.

Cable Machines & Resistance Bands

As far as cable machines and resistance bands go, the OmniStrap has several attachment points.

omnistrap

I can use the D-rings in front and back of my shin.

The ankle wrap can easily be rotated so that the D-rings face inside or outside my shin for lateral leg movements.

omnistrap reviews

Or can use the long strap to hook up a carabiner at the bottom for exercises like reverse squats on a cable machine.

OmniStrap Exercises

I can do a TON of lower body isolation exercises with the OmniStrap.

Some exercises I’ve tried include leg extensions, leg curls, reverse squats, hip extension, hip flexion, tib raises, and knee raises.

Since I have two OmniStraps, I can put both on when doing hanging knee raises and weighted pull ups.

Another two-legged exercise I like doing with these is reverse hypers with a resistance band.

freak-athlete-nordic-hyper-ghd-reviews-107

I anchor the bands down on my Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD and clip them to straps to get constant resistance.

In the video above I’m using the OmniStrap with my Ancore Trainer for a cable shoulder workout.

This removes any wrist or grip limitations and really isolates my deltoids.

Price

monkeyfeet

When comparing prices between MonkeyFeet and the OmniStrap, MonkeyFeet sells for $80 per boot.

the omnistrap

The OmniStrap sells for less than half that price at $35 per strap.

Shoe Compatibility

Since MonkeyFeet uses a boot that goes around the foot, shoes with wide bases around the heel may be an issue.

According to MonkeyFeet’s website, the maximum width shoe it supports is 3.5 inches.

With the OmniStrap anchoring around the ankle, shoe width is not an issue.

Dumbbell Compatibility

Because of MonkeyFeet’s booth width, there are some dumbbells it may not work with.

The dumbbell handle should be a minimum of 5 inches wide and 37 mm diameter.

With the OmniStrap’s long strap, handle width or diameter is not an issue.

Resistance Band/Cable Compatibility

I can attach a resistance band or cable to the bottom of the MonkeyFeet boot.

Just wrap the band through the inside of the jaws and clip it to itself.

omnistrap reviews

The same can be done with the OmniStrap’s long strap at the bottom plus I have the D-rings around the ankle.

Weight Capacity

Both MonkeyFeet and the OmniStrap have more than enough weight capacity for any unilateral exercise.

MonkeyFeet’s site says their weight capacity is 160 lbs per foot.

OmniStrap says they’ve used their product with a 75 lbs dumbbell and over 200 pounds on a cable machine.

Points of Attachment

When it comes to points of attachment, MonkeyFeet has the jaws at the bottom of the heel.

omnistrap review

The OmniStrap has the bottom strap and D-rings in front and back of the shin.

All these attachment points make the OmniStrap one of the best ankle straps for cable machines.

Space Saving

Both of these products are huge space savers and take up minimal space when compared to a stand alone leg curl / leg extension machine.

MonkeyFeet is the biggest of the two and it’s only as big as a 10 lbs iron weight plate.

omnistrap vs monkeyfeet

With that being said, since the OmniStrap is foldable it takes up less than half the space of MonkeyFeet.

MonkeyFeet Alternative

After comparing both products, the OmniStrap clearly has its advantages making it an excellent MonkeyFeet alternative.

I would even say that the makers of the OmniStrap improved the leg attachment market in a huge way with this simple product.

OmniStrap Review

Is the OmniStrap the best ankle strap for gym workouts available right now?

It’s definitely more versatile than MonkeyFeet.

I can attach dumbbells, kettlebells, cables, and resistance bands to it so as far as exercise variety goes, it can do it all.

Since it’s designed to wrap around ankles there’s no limitations on shoe width or dumbbell handle size.

And with a smaller footprint and less than half the price of MonkeyFeet, this may take the #1 spot as the best ankle attachment.

  1. Thank you for posting a complete how to on installing the Omni strap. The instructions that came with it are garbage. I look forward to using them. Great review.

    1. Similar functions in both but the type of equipment used and placement of the resistance is different.

Omnistrap uses dumbbells (even works with Powerblock) that sit below foot whereas the Ankr uses weight plates that sit next to the ankle.

OmniStrap can also be used with cable machine and resistance bands.
