Slant Board Guy Review

The Slant Board Guy website (SBG) sells equipment for people dealing with knee pain.

More specifically, people who follow the Knees Over Toes Guy program.

The program recommends specific pieces of equipment for their exercises, which the Slant Board Guy sells.

In this review, I’ll be covering the slant board and step up board.

Unboxing

Slant Board

The slant board came wrapped in a thin sheet of white packing paper.

I like the anti-slip tape all over the board.

Feels really grippy with shoes and it’s gentle enough to use barefoot.

The vertical side of the board also has anti-slip tape.

Here’s a closer look at the anti-slip tape.

It has a sand paper like texture to it.

When I flipped it over I noticed it has a middle support.

These three bottom support pieces should give it plenty of weight capacity.

Step Up Board

The step up board came bubble wrapped.

It’s also covered in anti-slip tape.

Looking at it from the front it looks like there’s only two levels to it but there’s actually three.

Here’s a view from the side.

The bottom has crossing middle supports.

Both boards are made of solid wood and are packed in boxes that match their dimensions so there’s no shifting around during shipping.

Custom Boards

One option I liked about the Slant Board Guy website, is that you can customize your boards.

It costs more than their regular boards but if you have the budget for it, you can put your brand on their equipment.

This option is available for the slant board and step up board.

SBG Duo

If you prefer a more portable slant board, SBG sells the Duo.

They’re individual slant boards for each foot.

The advantage of these over a single slant board is that they’re easier to travel with and you can also get into a wider stance.

Nordic Straps

Because the Knees Over Toes program prescribes nordic curls, the Slant Board Guy sells Nordic straps.

The straps anchor your legs down to a weight bench.

I don’t own one but they’re a simple solution for Nordic curls without taking up extra space.

For bodyweight hamstring curls I usually use my NordStick or rack mounted Nordic bar.

Knees Over Toes Guy Exercises

I really like the versatility these two boards give me, especially when I’m doing Knees Over Toes Guy exercises.

By changing how much of my feet go on the slant board, I can change the angle of ankle involvement.

And by using the different levels on the step up board, I can change the difficulty or depth of exercises.

Plus I use them both at the same time for even more variations.

Slant Board Exercises

By having both my feet on the slant board, I eliminate any ankle dorsiflexion limitations.

At the same time this shifts my knees forward and keeps my back straight so the focus goes to my quads (more specifically the VMO muscle).

This movement is similar to what a leg press hack squat machine does where the spine is straight and the legs do all the work.

It’s also a cheap alternative to a leg extension machine so if you don’t have space for a dedicated machine, here’s your solution.

I currently alternative between a slant board and the leg developer on the Freak Athlete Hyper Pro because I can use it for leg curls too.

As my ankle range of motion improves, I can have part of my feet on the floor and the other half on the board.

ATG split squats can also be done on the slant board.

Poliquin reverse step ups are another option.

I’ll show you later on how these can be made more challenging by adding the step up board.

I can get a great calves and hamstrings stretch by turning around on the slant board.

And strengthen my calves and ankles with some calf raises.

I like this version of body weight tib raises because you can get a good tib stretch at the bottom.

Once bodyweight tib raises get easier, I can progress to adding weights with a tib bar.

Step Up Board Exercises

If you have good ankle mobility but your hip flexors are too tight on the opposite leg, the step up board is a good option.

Planting your forward foot on a high platform reduces the amount of stretch on the opposite side hip flexors.

One of my favorite things about the step up board is the different heights you can use.

Other platforms use a single height but the Slant Board Guy’s board gives me more options.

So if you’re just starting out, the 2″ option is your best bet.

After 2″ becomes easy to do without pain, you can progress to the 4″ platform.

And then the 6″ height.

This one’s called the Patrick Reverse Step Up.

If you have good ankle mobility, then keep your foot flat on the platform and slowly do a reverse step up.

If you’re ankle mobility is not there yet, throw the slant board on top of the step up board and do them this way.

This one is called the Poliquin reverse step up.

Whenever I want to get a bigger stretch on my hamstrings, I like doing deficit Romanian deadlifts.

I set up my barbell over the highest platform.

step up box exercises

This allows me to get a deeper stretch at the bottom of the RDL.

Of course, I can also do these with a pair of dumbbells.

What I Like

  • Grip: Anti-slip grip tape prevents slipping, gentle enough to do exercises barefoot
  • Solid: Both boards have a weight capacity of 750 lbs and feel very stable, no wobbling.
  • Build: Made of durable structural wood with middle support
  • Progressions: Different heights (step up board) and foot placement (slant board) let you progress at your own pace.
  • Customization: Having the option to customize the boards with your logo makes them more personalized

Recommended Improvements

One thing I would improve on is making the slant board adjustable.

This would help to measurably use different angles rather than guessing which angle you’re at by changing feet position.

I understand adding moving parts to the board can change its weight capacity, but it’d be nice to track angles as ankle mobility improves.

Slant Board Guy Review

I like how both the slant board and step up board work together.

Before I started doing exercises with these boards I wasn’t aware of how they worked.

But after going through them, they are harder than they look especially when done one leg at a time.

The Slant Board Guy boards are helpful with progressions and regressions regardless of your fitness level.

They’re sturdy, non-slip, and can be used with a lot of exercises.
