Weight It Out (WIO) cast iron weight plates are the world’s thinnest plates.
At 3/4″ thick, I can throw more on the barbell and take up less space in my garage gym.
With dual handles, these are easy to carry around.
And the clear coat gives them a nice glossy look.
Let’s check these out!
Unboxing
I got two thin 45 lbs weight plates.
Each cast iron weight plate came in a tightly sealed box with plastic strapping and tape.
Once out of the box, the plates are beautiful.
I got the clear coat and love the glossy look on silver.
Each side of the weight plates has “Weight It Out” engraved at the top
The middle has the weight in pounds and kilos.
And the bottom has “Made in the USA”.
At the top and bottom there’s a cutout that works as a handle making it easy to carry the plates.

- Thickness: 3/4″ thick
- Diameter: 450MM (17.72″)

Coating Options
There’s two coating options for the plates.
I’ve shown you the clear coat that I got.
And they also have a black coat like the one shown in the picture above.
Both coats help to protect the cast iron weight plates from the elements.
Thinnest 45 LBS Weight Plates
There’s a few advantages to having the thinnest weight plates.
For one, I can add more plates to my barbell whereas with bumper plates I can run out of space quickly.
And two, they take up less space when they’re not in use.
Weight It Out Iron Plates vs Bumper Plates
I wanted to compare the WIO plates vs my competition bumper plates and it’s crazy how much space bumpers take up.
The height is exactly the same.
And the diameter matches perfectly.
If you draw a vertical line from the sides, both plates are evenly matched.
Both have a 450 MM (17.72″) diameter.
Here you can see how much thinner the WIO plates are compared to a 45 lbs bumper plate.
I stacked two WIO plates on top of each other and they are still thinner than the bumper plate.
Barbell Loading
Here’s a look at both plates on my powerlifting barbell.
The space the bumper plate takes on the sleeve is significant when you look at it next to the WIO plate.
This is what it looks like from both ends of the bar.
For a powerlifter this is a good thing because you can throw more plates on the bar without running out of space.
Storage
When it comes to storage the WIO plates save a ton of space.
I keep my plates on tire hangers to get them off the floor and as you can see, the bumpers take up twice as much space on the hanger.
Weight It Out vs Other Cast Iron Weight Plates
I have an old set of Gold’s Gym cast iron weight plates that I’ve owned for a while.
They’re smaller than I thought when I set the Weight It Out plates next to them.
From the side you can see the Gold’s Gym plate is thicker.
It’s about twice as thick as Weight It Out’s plate.
And here’s a bird’s eye view showing you Gold’s Gym’s plate is about an inch more narrow.
Weight It Out Plates Alternative
XMaster chrome weight plates are an alternative to Weight It Out’s plates.
Both are thin and both have handles.
Aside from the obvious finish, XMaster’s plates are only 1/16″ thicker than Weight It Out’s so they are neck in neck.
Adding Plate Snacks To Weight Plates
I’ve decorated iron weight plates in the past with Plate Snacks decals.
And now they’ve teamed up with Weight It Out to make custom decals that have handle cut outs.
They have tons of decals to customize plates and add a bit of personality and customization to any gym.
Weight Plate Accuracy
I tested the weight plates for accuracy and sure enough they are within 1% of the weight on the plate.
The 45 lbs thin plates weighed in at 44.6 lbs (+ – 1% tolerance).
Weight It Out Thin Bumper Plates
Weight It Out has now started pre-selling the thinnest 45 lbs bumper plates in the world.
These are their specs:
- Material: Premium rubber for reduced noise and floor protection
- Thickness: 1.3″
- Diameter: Olympic Size Diameter 450MM (17.72″)
- Color: Blue
- Durometer: 90
- Weight variance: 1.5%
Here’s a look at their thing bumper plate from the side.
To give you comparison, the average 45 lbs bumper plates has a thickness of 3.5″ which is twice as much as Weight It Out’s bumpers.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Storage: I can store more plates without taking up space
- Load up the bar: Thin plates let you load up more on the bar (this is great for powerlifters)
- Handles: The handles make it easy to load and unload
- Coating: Clear coat protects the plates from rust (also available in black coat)
- Accurate: Weight plates are within 1% of weight claimed
Cons
- Thinness: They wobble a bit more than thicker plates because they take up less surface area on the bar but a good barbell collar solves that.

Weight It Out Cast Iron Plates Review
I like cast iron weight plates so I personally like the WIO plates better than bumper plates.
Everything from the handles, coating, and engraving is top notch.
If you like the sound of iron plates clanking, these are great quality.
